The first half of the talk will present an overview of current research in my laboratory (FUNLAB) at U. Washington. A few projects will be described, leading to a vista of emerging research opportunities in wireless networking. The second half of the talk will describe my plans and vision for the ECE Dept. in a manner that encourages dialogue.


Sumit Roy received the B. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur) in 1983, and the M. S. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of California (Santa Barbara), all in Electrical Engineering in 1985 and 1988 respectively, as well as an M. A. in Statistics and Applied Probability in 1988. Presently he is Prof. of Electrical Engineering, Univ. of Washington where his research interests broadly include analysis/design of wireless communications and networked systems. His technology focus includes a variety of wireless networks (WLANs, 3G/4G networks) including inter-networking of multi-standard (heterogeneous) networks that exploit software defined (cognitive radio) technology, and their applications to emerging applications (vehicular networking, RFID based sensor networks and underwater acoustic networks). He spent 2001-03 on academic leave at Intel Wireless Technology Lab, Hillsboro, OR as a Senior Researcher engaged in systems architecture and standards development for ultra-wideband systems (802.15.3 Wireless PANs) and next generation high-speed wireless LANs (pre 802.11n). His activities for the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) includes membership of several technical committees and has served as Editor for all major ComSoc publications (IEEE Trans. Communications, IEEE JSAC and IEEE Trans. on Wireless Communications). He was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 2007 for “contributions to cross-layer design of wireless networks and contribution to standards”.
